$200M fund set to boost pediatric healthcare in rural Georgia

A collaboration between Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Macon, Ga.-based Mercer University School of Medicine aims to improve pediatric healthcare in rural Georgia.

The initiative is being supported by a $200 million fund the Children's Healthcare board allocated in 2022, according to a Feb. 22 news release from Mercer.

Among the priorities of the initiative is to increase access to pediatricians in rural counties, according to the release. Children's Healthcare is funding 10 full-tuition scholarships in 2023 through a program with Mercer for medical students specializing in pediatrics who commit to serving in rural Georgia for at least four years after residency.

Funds will also be used on pilots and projects, according to the release. Proposed programs include:

  • Assisting rural hospitals better prepare and treat pediatric patients in emergency departments.
  • Providing training and resources to physicians focused on challenges regularly faced in rural practices. Mercer identified a need for specialty consult services via telehealth for rural patients and a network of pediatricians focused on rural pediatric health.
  • Mercer and Children's will work with schools, pediatricians and hospitals to develop a comprehensive approach to pediatric mental health in two communities with virtual mental health services and a focus on suicide awareness and prevention.

What is healthcare Software?

Healthcare software refers to any type of computer program or application designed to assist healthcare professionals in their work. These software applications are used to manage patient information, streamline clinical workflows, and improve healthcare delivery.

Types

Many types of healthcare software are available, including electronic health records (EHRs), medical billing software, practice management systems, clinical decision support tools, telemedicine software, and more. These software applications can be used in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and other healthcare settings to help providers deliver high-quality care and improve patient outcomes.

Benefits

Some benefits of healthcare software include increased efficiency, improved accuracy, enhanced patient safety, and better communication between healthcare providers. However, it is important to note that healthcare software must be carefully designed and rigorously tested to ensure that it meets the unique needs and requirements of healthcare providers and patients alike.

Pediatric EMR Software

Pediatric EMR software is a specialized electronic medical records system designed specifically for healthcare providers who treat children. This software can help pediatricians and other healthcare providers manage a variety of patient data, including medical history, vaccination records, growth charts, and developmental milestones.

Some common features of pediatric EMR software include:

Growth Charts: This feature enables providers to track a child's growth over time, which is important for assessing overall health and development.

Immunization Tracking: This feature helps providers keep track of a child's immunization records and schedule vaccinations.

Developmental Milestones: This feature allows providers to track a child's developmental progress, including speech, motor skills, and social development.

Appointment Scheduling: Pediatric EMR software often includes appointment scheduling features, which can help providers manage their schedules and keep track of patient visits.

Prescription Management: This feature allows providers to manage and track prescription medications for their patients.

When selecting pediatric EMR software, it's important to consider the specific needs of your practice and ensure that the software is customizable to meet those needs. Additionally, it's important to choose a vendor with a proven track record of providing reliable and secure software, as patient data must be kept confidential and secure at all times.
